A Michigan woman has been arrested after she allegedly lied about two Black men attacking her on a walking trail.

According to the Lansing State Journal, Madison Mackenzie Wright, 20, is facing charges of false report of a felony after St. John's police determined that she fabricated an attack.

Wright initially told police that she was walking the Fred Meijer Clinton-Ionia-Shiawassee Trail just after midnight last week “when she was confronted by two male subjects who approached her from a wooded area north of the trail." During the alleged attack, Wright claimed the men attempted to grab her and that one of them slashed her with a pocketknife. Wright described the alleged suspects as 6-foot-tall, thin Black men.

Wright reported the alleged incident 12 minutes after she claimed it occurred. Following an investigation, St. John's police found Wright had lied about the incident.

In a statement, the police department warned the public against believing everything they see on social media.

“The St. Johns Police Department would like to assure the community that the safety of the City is a fundamental priority,” police said. “The inaccurate and speculative social media posts related to this incident resulted in significant concerns for the community. The Department urges residents to rely on information issued by the Department, which will be distributed in a timely and situationally appropriate manner.”

Wright is currently being held in the Clinton County Jail on a $5,000 bond.
