A Checkers employee in Florida is facing charges after he allegedly shot a drive-thru customer during a dispute over mayonnaise packets.
According to PEOPLE, 23-year-old employee Elijah Travis Mackey was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a customer, identified as Wesley Robertson, on May 21 at a Checkers drive-thru in Kissimmee, Florida.
An altercation unfolded between the two after Robertson began complaining about his order, allegedly asking to speak with a manager several times. Mackey came around the side of the fast food restaurant and began arguing with Robertson. The customer allegedly called Mackey a "b*tch or p****" before the employee pulled out a gun and shot him in the chest.
Robertson was “possibly asking for mayonnaise packets” when Mackey came outside and shot him, according to authorities and witnesses. The customer was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
Mackey was booked into Osceola County Jail on charges of first-degree premeditated murder.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Checkers said, “We are shocked and saddened by the incident that occurred last night at our restaurant in Kissimmee, Florida.”
“The actions of this one employee do not reflect the values of the thousands of our hardworking employees across the country,” the spokesperson continued. “We are working closely with the police in their investigation, and we are sending our thoughts and prayers to the guest's family."
