Misinformation surrounding the fatal stabbing at a Frisco high school track meet is spreading on social media, sparking confusion and even threats to the families involved, CBS News reports.
The fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf unfolded on April 2 at a track meet at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco. Karmelo Anthony, 17, was charged with murder in connection with the stabbing and is being held on $1 million bail. The case has been subjected to intense social media attention as Anthony says he acted in self-defense.
Fabricated details about the incident have been spread by several social media accounts, including a fake X profile posing as the Frisco Police Chief. A fabricated autopsy report surfaced on Facebook, falsely claiming that drugs were involved in the incident. More disinformation came from fake Instagram screenshots of guns, fueling uncertainty and outrage.
The Frisco Police Department said the FBI said authorities are investigating the fake X account that impersonated the chief, which is a criminal offense.
According to an eyewitness, a dispute between the teenagers unfolded when Metcalf asked Anthony to move from under a tent that was set up for his high school track team. Anthony allegedly warned Metcalf not to touch him before the latter put his hands on the 17-year-old. According to authorities, Anthony then told Metcalf to punch him and see what happens. Metcalf attempted to physically move Anthony from the tent before the stabbing unfolded, according to police.
Anthony maintains that he acted in self-defense. A fundraiser set up by Anthony's family has raised over $150,000 for his defense.
“The narrative being spread is false, unjust, and harmful,” the Anthony family wrote on the fundraiser. “As a family of faith, we are deeply grateful for all of your support during this trying period. Your prayers and assistance mean more to us now more than ever.”
Both families have had their home addresses shared online and faced threats due to misinformation spread through social media. Extra security was also reportedly present for Metcalf's funeral due to online activity.
