The 2021 NFL Draft kicked off in Cleveland, Ohio and it was not without drama. Just hours before the draft began, reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers hinted that he may want out of Green Bay in favor of the Denver Broncos. However, the Green Bay Packers appear to be ready to play hardball as they have no interest in trading the Jeopardy! host.
"As we've stated since the season ended, we are committed to Aaron in 2021 and beyond," Green Bay Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst told ESPN.
"Aaron has been a vital part of our success and we look forward to competing for another championship with him leading our team."
The Green Bay Packers stuck to their word and opted not to trade their Super Bowl-winning quarterback during the first round of the NFL Draft, but that doesn't mean there was any shortage of drama. As expected, Clemson University Quarterback Trevor Lawrence and BYU Quarterback Zach Wilson were selected with the top two picks, but things got interesting with the third pick as the San Francisco 49ers selected Trey Lance out of North Dakota State University. Only a few weeks ago, it appeared that the 49ers were set on drafting national champion Mac Jones, but he ended up falling to the New England Patriots twelve picks later. His opponent in the 2021 College Football Championship, Justin Fields, also fell to the Chicago Bears after being a projected top-three pick at the start of last season.
Overall, the University of Alabama Crimson Tide emerged as the big winners. The 2021 Crimson Tide ball club tied the 2004 Miami Hurricanes for the most players taken in the first round of the NFL Draft. Jones, Najee Harris, Patrick Surtain II, DeVonta Smith, Alex Leatherwood and Jaylen Waddle were all taken off the board in round one. With rounds two through seven set for this weekend, there's a chance they can break the all-time record for most players drafted from one team.
